World Environment Day, celebrated annually on June 5, encourages worldwide awareness and action for the protection of the environment. In 2020, the theme is biodiversity–a concern that is both urgent and existential. Recent events, from bushfires in Brazil, the United States and Australia to locust infestations across East Africa–and now, a global disease pandemic–demonstrate the interdependence of humans and the webs of life in which they exist. On May 19, the World Health Assembly, the decision-making body of the World Health Organization (WHO), adopted a landmark resolution, which sets out a roadmap of the actions needed to sustain and accelerate the COVID-19 response at both national and international levels. Among other things, the resolution calls for equitable access to and fair distribution of all essential health technologies and products to combat the virus. It also calls for an independent and comprehensive evaluation of the global response, including, but not limited to, WHO’s performance.(Read more...)

Block by Block, an innovative collaboration between the UN-Habitat and the company behind the popular computer game Minecraft, is giving citizens of all ages and backgrounds, in cities and communities across the world, the chance to play an important role in redesigning their public spaces.
