WANGO News 2022

The ocean covers over 70% of the planet. It is our life source, supporting humanity’s sustenance and that of every other organism on earth. It produces at least 50% of the planet’s oxygen, is home to most of the earth’s biodiversity, and is the main source of protein for more than a billion people around the world. With 90% of big fish populations depleted and 50% of coral reefs destroyed, more is being taken from the ocean than can be replenished. World Oceans Day, observed annually on June 8, reminds every one of the major role the oceans have in everyday life, and this year focuses on theme, "Revitalization: Collective Action for the Ocean." This year, the UN will host a hybrid event on that day from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. EDT. To learn more, please click on the headline above. (Read more...)

During the 1990s and around the turn of the millennium it became more common to involve and invite civil society groups into ongoing peace processes. In the Guatemalan peace process from 1990 to 1996, civil society had an important impact on several issues on the negotiation agenda but less so on some sensitive and critical ones.
