Three post-Congress tours are being made available to participants of the World Congress of NGOs. One tour, to Nairobi National Park, takes place on the afternoon of Sunday, July 8, after the Congress has concluded, with return that evening. One tour, to Lake Nakuru National Park, is a full day trip that departs on the morning of Monday, July 9 and returns that evening. The final tour is a two-day excursion that begins the morning of Sunday, July 8 and returns the evening of Monday, July 9; this overnight safari may require missing some of the closing sessions of the Congress on Sunday morning.
Sign up and payment for the tours will take place at the Congress with the tour operators. Individuals wishing to take one of the tours should arrange their airline flight departure accordingly. Longer tours, such as a three-day, two-night tour to the Maasai Mara Game Reserve, may be arranged by attendees independently of the Congress.
Tour # 1: Nairobi National Park
(4 hours)
The 117 km2 Nairobi National Park is unique by being the only protected area in the world with a variety of animals and birds close to a capital city. As expected, the park is a principal attraction for visitors to Nairobi.
The Park also serves many residents and citizens living in the city and has a diversity of environments with characteristic fauna and flora. Open grass plains with scattered Acacia bush are predominant. The western side has a highland dry forest and a permanent river with a riverine forest in the south. In addition, there are stretches of broken bush country and deep, rocky valleys and gorges with scrub and long grass. Man-made dams have also added a further habitat, favorable to certain species of birds and other aquatic biota (life forms). The dams also attract water dependent herbivores during the dry season.
Nairobi National Park is one of the most successful of Kenya's rhino sanctuaries that is already generating a stock for reintroduction in the species former range and other upcoming sanctuaries. Due to this success, it is one of the few parks where a visitor can be certain of seeing a black rhino in its natural habitat. To the south of the park is the Athi-Kapiti Plains and Kitengela Migration and dispersal area. These are vital areas for herbivores dispersal during the rains and concentrate in the park in the dry season.
Roads: Located only about 7 km from the city centre, the Park is easily accessible on tarmac roads, mainly through Langata Road. There is an adequate administration and viewing road network with satisfactory signage.

Tour # 2: Lake Nakuru National Park
(Day Trip from Nairobi)
Lake Nakuru, a shallow alkaline lake, lies about 100 miles north of Nairobi on a tarmac road. It can therefore be reached easily by road from the capital and the transfer takes less than three hours. The lake is world famous as the location of the greatest bird spectacle on earth - myriads of pink flamingo whose numbers are legion, often more than a million and which literally turn its shores pink. They feed on the abundant algae which thrive in the warm waters. But Flamingoes are not the only avian attraction, as the lake is rich in other birdlife. There are over 400 resident species on the lake and in the surrounding park. Large numbers of Pelicans concentrate by the fresh-water streams that flow into the lake, and thousands of other birds may be seen including African Fish Eagles, white-winged Black Terns, Stilts, Avocets, Ducks and in the European winter, the migrant waders.
Lake Nakuru national park surrounds the lake, offering a wide ecological diversity, from the lakeshore, woodland, grassy plains to rocky escarpments and ridges. It has recently been enlarged to provide a sanctuary for black Rhino and now has one of the largest concentrations of Rhinoceros in the country (both black Rhino and white Rhino), so the chances of spotting these are very good. There are also a number of Rothschild's Giraffes, translocated for safety from western Kenya. Waterbucks, Zebras and Cape Buffaloes are very common. Lions are present in the park and, like the Lions of Lake Manyara, are quite often seen in the Acacia trees. Leopards are also frequently sighted and Lake Nakuru National Park is one of the places where visitors have the best chance of seeing these elusive big cats. The bushlands offer Elands, Warthogs, Impalas, Mountain Reedbuck and Dik Diks, whilst rock Hyrax and Klipspringers occupy the cliffs and escarpment. (Tour Duration: Full Day) 170Km, 2.5 Hours Away from Nairobi
Lake Nakuru National Park safari departs in the early morning from your hotel to the Escarpment to the floor of the Great Rift Valley in to Lake Nakuru National Park. Along the way you have the chance to stop at the viewpoint and take pictures of the Great Rift Valley below you. The day is spent game viewing within the park; stopping for lunch at one of the lodges in the Park. We return to Nairobi in the late afternoon.
You may get out of the vehicle at the Lake shore to get a closer look at the birds. The nearby cliffs offer sightings of Baboons, birds of prey and scurrying Hyraxes, as well as great views of the park. Lake Nakuru National Park covers 180 sq km and is home to Warthogs, Water bucks, Buffaloes, Reedbucks, and the occasional Leopards as well as White and Black Rhinos which were introduced to the Park a few years ago. The price will be US$ 166 per person {minimum 10 people}
