First WANGO Chapter in Africa Begins

The WANGO Ghana Chapter was inaugurated at the Annual Members Meeting on September 27th, which convened during the recent Annual Conference in Bangkok. The recognition event culminated several months of groundwork and preparation undertaken by Mr. Charles Abbey, the WANGO Ghana National Representative and President of the African Development Programme. Mr. Abbey, who has also demonstrated his leadership abilities in capacities such as Chairman of the Ghana Association of Private Voluntary Organizations in Development (GAPVOD), the largest umbrella organization of NGOs in Ghana which seeks to aid communication between civil society and government, had invited NGOs from all regions of Ghana to come on board. The founding group of 34 organizations who accepted the invitation welcomed the opportunity to form the WANGO Ghana chapter as a means to facilitate intra-state networking, to coordinate activities on the national level, and to address regional concerns.

As is outlined in WANGO International Bylaws (available on the website: www.wango.org ), only one national chapter is permitted per nation; and though a minimum of 30 WANGO member organizations are needed to found a chapter, all members of WANGO in that nation are automatically members of the chapter and have the right to vote for officers of the national body. The chapters have a lot of autonomy yet follow required parameters both, to be established, and in their activities. Membership in national chapters is restricted to organizations and individuals who hold membership in the international body. Also, involvement of an organization in a national chapter is purely voluntary, and no additional dues may be collected for use by the chapter, though a portion of member dues paid to WANGO International are returned to the chapter.
