Conference Invitation

As the Africa Regional Coordinator for WANGO and member of the Technical Programme Committee, I would like to invite you, members and staff of your organization to participate in the upcoming 2010 WANGO Africa Conference taking place on April 29 through May 02 at the SENTRIM Hotels and Lodges, Nairobi, Kenya. The event, which will be hosted on theme: Non-State Actors and Ethical Re-Orientation, is expected to draw over 200 third sector leaders, practitioners, business and government representatives from within and outside the region.

The theme of this year’s event is central to all facets of life. It is a general obsession in our general development that we all know the right but doing the right thing becomes a hard nut to crack. Almost every institution suffers the plague of following teachings and doctrines without adherence to activities and actions. Morality and values often have been overtaken by shameless desires and megalomania by mostly people entrusted with the authority to oversee the progress and development of others. These topsy-turvy aspects of society adversely affects our development, resulting in poverty, crises and social vices. We should fold our arms while our cherished ethics and values are continuously and deliberately being abused. There is, therefore, a need for a lasting solution to this phenomenon to help society. If the first sector of the realm (government) and the second sector (business) close their eyes to this problem, the third sector (non-for-profit) cannot afford to do the same. It is high time the non-state actors (NSAs) come out to hold the bull by the horn, to ensure the re-orientation and the resuscitation of our lost ethics and values in the various institutions, for us to reap the dividend of our resources.

The WANGO International Code of Ethics and Conduct for NGOs is undergoing reviews, and at this event, experts will provide useful advice on Self-Certification Process that serves as guiding principle for our daily advocacy and engagement.  Also, updates and developments on the Zero Illiteracy Project (ZIP), launched in Ghana 2008 at the first edition of conference in the region, will commence its 15-nation launch through the special Community Library Project (CLP). Attendees are expected to return home with this new initiative on how best to reduce the level of illiteracy in the Africa continent.

As a member of the global NGO community, it would be a great advantage to have you in audience as we champion a new direction to solving the above challenges and discuss other issues of import to the sector. In particular, the conference provides you a unique opportunity to share your concerns, views and issues that we help in networking opportunity for the greater good of the society.

Please visit www.wango.org/africa for more details on the conference. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any concern(s). Kenya Airways, our Official Airline for the event, is providing a 15% rebate to all registrants attending the event.

See you in Kenya!
